Virtual or Dedicated? It's a question that almost every business owner or webmaster will need to answer. In years gone by the answer to this question would usually have been dedicated. A dedicated server provides you with dedicated resources, not shared by anyone else and therefore should be extremely stable. For the most part that is still correct but what about outages at the data centre or failed equipment? That's where a virtual server has clear advantages over a dedicated server.

The three stages of F2H High Availability

Our Cloud VPS servers benefit from our unique failover mitigation sequence. These are the three stages we follow to keep customers online when things go wrong. Let's imagine that a host that powers the VPS servers appears to be experiencing an outage. The network has lost contact with the host and VPS servers on the host appear offline.

Stage One Failover Mitigation

In stage one mitigation, we move all VPS servers off the host to a different host that is usually contained in the same server rack. This process is called automatic failover between hosts. If services are not resumed after failover, we move to stage two mitigation.

Stage Two Failover Mitigation

Moving services to a different host in the same data centre hasn't worked. Our monitoring system now assumes the entire data centre is experiencing an outage. We now failover services to a different data centre in the same country.

Stage Three Failover Mitigation

If stage two mitigation fails, our systems now assume a country-wide issue has happened. Our mitigation should never reach this point but if stages one and two fail, we will move VPS servers to a different datacentre in a different country. For example, if the server was located in France. It would failover to the United Kingdom.
